Around the Massapequa Public School District, one of the major goals of the physical education program is to teach students about lifelong fitness habits and encourage them to make safe and healthy choices.
In this regard, physical education teachers around the district showed students just how fun exercise could be when they participated in an initiative called Project ACES (All Children Exercise Simultaneously). Originally introduced in the district at Lockhart Elementary School by physical educator Beth Shackel-Scott, the program quickly spread to other buildings.
During the half hour block of time from 10 a.m. – 10: 30 a.m., every student in each participating building across the United States convened outside or in the gymnasium for a half hour of sustained exercise to some of the students’ favorite line-dances such as “Cotton-eyed Joe.”
