Massapequa runners continue to excel in local races. On June 14, Sal Nastasi was the overall winner of the 21st annual David Lerner Associates Long Island Police Appreciation Run, a 5K race held at Eisenhower Park.
Nastasi crossed the finish line in 16 minutes, 49 seconds, a pace of 5:25 per mile that brought him to the finish line 21 seconds in front of runner-up Bradley Raxenberg of Woodbury.
Nastasi, a member of the Greater Long Island Running Club, is a sales associate at the Runner’s Edge Running and Multisport store in Farmingdale and runs competitively for the Bellmore Striders racing team.
The net proceeds of the run will once again be turned over to the special Police Crisis Fund that has been established to aid local law enforcement officers and their families in time of personal financial emergency. In the twenty-one years of its existence, nearly $300,000 has been distributed to local law enforcement officers and their families.
The key sponsor of the run was David Lerner Associates, the Long Island-based investment securities firm.
In addition to Nastasi, other local runners who excelled in the run were Cindy Stimpfel of Massapequa, who took first-place honors in the Female Master Law Enforcement Division, Chelsea Horch and Kathleen Duffy, both of Massapequa, who finished first and second among the women in the 15-19 age group, Karen Conkling of Massapequa, who earned top honors in the women’s 45-49 age group, and Howard Kestenbaum of Massapequa Park, who won the second-place award in the 80-84 age group.
