A record field of 456 runners, walkers and wheelchair athletes participated in the 29th annual Runner’s Edge Long Island Women’s Run on July 14 and local runners were prominent in the list of award winners.
Leading the local contingent was 15 year-old-Chelsea Hroch of North Massapequa, who took third place honors in the 15-19 age group. Melissa Kennedy of Amityville won first place honors in the 60-64 age group, Margarita Hernandez of Massapequa, was the fourth place finisher in the 70-74 age group, and oldest finisher Ruth Maller of Massapequa Park, 83 years young, took the first place plaque in the 80 and over age group.
Maria Michta’s winning time of 24:05 in the Racewalk Division was nearly four full minutes in front of her nearest competitor, Lorie Sheinwald of Old Bethpage. Michta’s last race before the Farmingdale Women’s Run was her winning 20K racewalk performance in the Olympic Trials in Eugene, OR and her next race will be the Olympic 20K race walk in London.
Other top local finishers included Jean Bohan of Oyster Bay, who scored in 19th place overall and second in the 40-44 age group, and Jeri Cavagnaro of Locust Valley, who won the fifth place award in the 65-69 age group.
