Massapequa is always a top baseball spot in Long Island and this summer, the Massapequa Longhorns, an 8-year-old travel baseball team is having a standout season.
The Longhorns started the spring season playing in the N.J.B.L. (National Junior Baseball League), American Division. The American Division is the best division of N.J.B.L. baseball and the team currently plays in the L.S.W. Summer A Division Travel League.
The Longhorns also played in the Connetquot Memorial Weekend Tournament where they played the top travel teams from Nassau and Suffolk Counties. They also played in the South Shore Tournament where they played against the top Nassau County Little League Tournament Teams.
So far, the Longhorns have a 23-0 record. They have won the 2012 N.J.B.L. American Division championship, defeating the L.I. Inferno 13-0. Erik Paulsen Jr. had two hits and three runs batted in and Bobby Stang has two hits and two runs batted in. John Reece pitched a complete-game one-hitter with 11 strikeouts. Below are some highlights of the season.
• 2012 Connetquot Memorial Weekend Tournament: The Longhorns beat the Connetquot Chiefs Black Team to win the championship in the bottom of the sixth inning on a three-run walk off over the fence home run by Erik Paulsen Jr. When he hit the home run, the Longhorns were down two runs with two outs and a runner on first and third in the bottom of the sixth inning.
• 2012 South Shore Tournament: The Longhorns beat the Merrick Vipers 1-0 in the championship game, with great pitching from John Reece, Ryan Heidrich and Chris Hayes. They each pitched two innings in the game combining on a one hitter with nine strikeouts. They were 6-0 in the tournament with six shutouts due to their pitching.
The Longhorns are currently 5-0 in the L.S.W. Summer Travel League. So far in 2012, the Longhorns have scored 279 runs and have only given up 39 runs.
The Longhorns were started in the summer of 2011 with mostly 6 year olds and 7 year olds where they competed in the 8-year-old B Division of the L.S.W. Travel League.
The Longhorns finished with the best record in their division and went on to win the 2011 L.S.W Summer Travel B Championship over the Farmingdale Greendogs.
