The Massapequa Longhorns finished their season last weekend by winning the LSW Travel League A Division with a 7-5 win over the Long Island Devils. This year, the Longhorns won no less than three championships with a final record at an impressive 30-0.
The following is a breakdown of the Travel League championship game.
In the second inning, Dom Casamassina singles and steals second. Tyler Payne doubles to center to drive him in. Payne steals third base and after Matt Hannon gets hit by a pitch, Chris Hayes hits a sacrifice fly to right to score Payne.
In the fourth inning with two outs, Matt Hannon doubles down the third base line. Chris Hayes gets hit by a pitch, setting the stage for Brian Boylan’s two-run triple deep down the left field line.
By now, John Reece has pitched four sterling innings, but in the fifth, Chris Hayes takes over on the mound. Hayes pitches well, but the Devils tie the score on a three-run home run.
In the sixth inning, Dom Casamassina starts the inning off with a walk and then steals second and third base. The next two Longhorns strike out, but Chris Hayes comes up with a single to score Casamassina. Brian Boylan then singles Hayes to third, where Erik Paulsen drives him in with a single. John Reece then drives in Boylan with another single.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Chris Hayes hits the first Devil, then gets a groundball back to the mound and throws the runner out a first. The next batter singles to score a run. John Reece then makes a great throw to first on a hard hit groundball to third for the second out. Chris Hayes is able to get the Devil’s cleanup to hit a slow roller to the mound where he fields and flips to Erik Paulsen for the win.
