The Massapequa High School boys’ baseball team turned the diamond at SUNY Farmingdale into a field of dreams last week, capturing the Nassau Class AA title with a nail biting, 7-5 victory over top-seeded General Douglas MacArthur High School.
The victory clinched a series sweep for the fourth-seeded Massapequa Chiefs (20-5) and earned them a trip to the Long Island Class AA championship game this week.
In the title-clinching game, Massapequa built a 5-0 lead in the second inning before Levittown’s MacArthur came charging back with five unanswered runs in the fifth inning. But the Chiefs answered back in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs to go ahead for good.
Timely hitting by Bobby Honeyman, Nick Comito and Mike Cardino cemented the hard-fought victory and the title.
The suspenseful second game of the series followed a dominating performance by Massapequa in game one, as lefthander Alex Cosenza tossed a complete game shutout.
