Runners from across the Massapequas and all over the New York Metropolitan area and beyond are cordially invited to be part of the 21st anniversary edition of New York Blood Center’s Rob’s Run, a 5-kilometer cross country race to be held on Sunday morning, December 1 at Stillwell Woods Park in Syosset.
Runners from the Massapequas have always been prominent in Rob’s Run. In the 2012 edition of Rob’s Run, Chris Mammone of Massapequa and Joe Grieco of Massapequa finished third and fourth overall respectively, and Joe’s sister Michele Grieco was the first woman in the 20-24 age group to cross the finish line.
Rob’s Run will be staged by the Greater Long Island Running Club under the direction of veteran GLIRC stalwarts Jim Murray and Sue Fitzpatrick. Murray and Fitzpatrick are hard at work putting the finishing touches on this individual and team competition that continues to be Long Island’s premier cross country event, and a great way to enjoy the beauties of Stillwell Woods.
Rob’s Run will start promptly at 9:15 a.m. on the morning of December. Registration and pickup will be at the Center for Developmental Disabilities from 7:15 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. The Center is located at 72 South Woods Road directly next door to Stillwell Woods.
As in the past, Rob’s Run is dedicated to the memory of Rob Lauterborn, an extraordinary human being, talented runner, and good friend, who was taken at far too young an age.
Veteran of Rob’s Run, or those otherwise familiar with the beauties of this trail, will know what a great morning this is going to be. For those who have never had the nerve to try running cross country before, this is an easy way of introducing oneself to the wonders of the woods and the fresh perspective on autumn running.
Entry fees are $25 for those who preregister and $30 for those who wait until the day of the Run to sign up. There is a 50 percent discount for high school and younger runners. Everyone who signs up is guaranteed to get one of the great giveaways that have always been a Rob’s Run tradition.
Unique awards will be presented to the top three male and female finishers overall, and to the top three male and female finishers in each of 17 five-year age groups ranging from 10 and under to 80 and over. Team awards will be presented to high school and middle school boys and girls teams, and to male, female, and co-ed teams in the open, masters and senior masters divisions.
