Obituaries

George Russo, a resident of Manhasset for 40 years, passed away from heart disease on April 18, 2008 at the age of 85. He was the beloved husband of Marie and father of Joseph and Michael. Marie and George were married 64 years on May 6, 2008. He had one brother, Joseph and his wife, Mary.

When George returned from his service in WWII, he went to college under the G.I. Bill and became a social studies teacher in Levittown. After that, he became assistant principal of Mineola High School, then assistant superintendent of the Mineola school system where he worked for 24 years. He was also in charge of the Special Education and Adult Education Departments. In addition, he taught administrative education at C.W. Post University.

While at Mineola, George became a good friend of State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, who was elected to the Mineola Board of Education at the age of 18. George was a "people persona" and an outstanding spokesman for all children. He loved music, telling jokes and was an avid gardener who grew basil to make pesto to give as gifts.

George was a member of the American Legion. He helped set up Mineola SEPTA (Special Education Parent Teachers Association).

Marie Rossi, of Mineola, died on May 5, 2008. She was a retired operator with the NY Telephone Company, Hempstead, and a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Wife of the late Raphael. Mother of Peter Rossi and the late Barbara Ostrowski. Sister of the late Anne Kopsky, Kathryn Riddell, the late Sonja Dahlen, Olga Malham, the late Peter Kopsky, the late Helen Portway and the late William Kopsky. Grandmother of Gregory, Michael, Matthew and Jessica. Arrangements were made by the Cassidy Funeral Home, Mineola. Funeral Mass at Corpus Christi RC Church. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery. Mary Shuart (nee Sheridan), of Albertson, formerly of College Point, Queens. She was born in Cavan, Ireland in 1926 to the late Elizabeth and Patrick Sheridan. Wife of the late Raymond E. Mother of Maureen Purcell (Patrick), Kathleen Downing (Frank) and Elizabeth Flagler. Grandmother of Kathleen Rush (Greg), Erin Gallo (Marcello), Patrick Purcell (Francesca), Keny Purcell, Maureen Boggio (Allan), Eileen and Michael Downing, Brendan, James, Elizabeth and John Flagler. Great-grandmother of Mack, Ben and Caroline Rush and Finn and Liam Gallo. Sister of James, Margaret and Daniel Sheridan and the late Nancy Buesker. Arrangements were made by Weigand Bros. Funeral Home, Williston Park. Mass at St. Aidan's RC Church. Interment St. Mary's Cemetery, Flushing. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Joseph E. Delaney, of Albertson, died on May 6, 2008. A WWII US Army veteran, he was a manager for over 33 years with LILCO. He was a member of VFW Albertson Post #5253. Husband of Gloria B. Father of Patricia (Pat) and Joseph (Joe) E. Jr. (Tricia). Grandfather of Chris, Matt, Sean and Ryan Kerszko and Olivia and Patrick Delaney. Great-grandfather of Emily and Liam Kerszko. Brother of Rev. William, Rev. Richard and Margaret Johner. Arrangements were made by Weigand Bros. Funeral Home, Williston Park. Funeral Mass at St. Aidan's RC Church. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery. Donations may be made in Joseph's memory to St. Aidan's Church or Hospice Care Network.
