Mineola is the winner here, with Republican Jack Martins running against Democratic Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy. Carolyn is the incumbent and, of course, Jack is the mayor. Both live in our village. So, we can't lose.

The usual big crowds attended the Mineola fair. On June 12, 1858, our post office was officially named the Mineola Post Office. Before that it was called the Hempstead Branch because that's where the RR tracks veered toward Hempstead. That was 150 years ago.

We were sorry to hear of the death of Joe Mannix, our longtime friend and fellow usher and the father of Deacon Brian Mannix and husband of Catherine.

That beautiful white Volvo station wagon XC70 belongs to Maryann Fearon. Her husband is the manager of a Volvo dealership.

Sheila and Pat Phelan of Plymouth Avenue were at Kiss the Chef. She owns a bar in Queens Village and he is in construction.

Betty O'Connor had some good things to say about our paper. She likes our county news, our sports and our puzzle. Betty is a good friend of Marge and Howie Hill and Bernadette and Julie McCrave. Betty was a teacher for many years.

Charlotte Going, Mae Freeman, Marie Byrnes and Norren McDonough lunched at Downtown Restaurant.

Kevin Etherson has worked at Winthrop Hospital for 28 years. He and his wife, Kathy, live on Marcellus Road.

That huge new parking field just east of Main Street should be good for downtown shopping.

Bernadette O'Brien lunched at Jonathans.

Dentist Edward Gottlieb shot an 84 at St. Andrews, the old course, during his trip to Scotland.

The Feast of Corpus Christi was concelebrated at the church with five priests, two deacons and with readings and hymns in English, Portuguese and Spanish. The Pastor James Bowman, Msgr. Edward Tarrant, Msgr. Eugene Murphy, Father Tomas Gomide, Father Gabriel Miah, Deacons Brian Mannix and John Reinhart participated.

On a personal note, Grace and I will celebrate our 60th Anniversary July 3. How she has endured me all those years, I don't know. We will hold a small party with just the immediate family at the Davenport.

In Jay Leno's bit called "Headlines," he had one "Man shoots unarmed Bear." Even Jay couldn't figure that one out.
