Tom is a former Mineola Junior Firefighter and an Ex-Captain of Engine Company #3 with over 22 years of service in the Mineola Fire Department. He also works as the director of safety for a local hospital. Still, vacation time is supposed to be a break from lifesaving duty but not for Tom.
While on vacation in Disneyworld, on the July 4 weekend, at Disney's Typhoon Lagoon, Bellizzi could not escape his responsibility as a firefighter.
Tom was awaiting a family member near the "Storm Slide" water ride. Lifeguards were pressed into action assisting another patron as Tom watched the pool area. Tom spotted another woman who was having difficulty after coming down the slide. The struggling woman's husband entered the water but he too was not a strong swimmer. The woman slipped from her husband's arm and again went under the water.
Recognizing the perilous situation, Tom decided to jump in and attempt to rescue the woman. Tom brought her back to the surface and brought her out of the water.Park personnel attribute the successful save to Tom's quick thinking and unselfish decision to enter the water.
Walt Disney president and executive officer Robert A. Iger took the time to thank Tom with a letter and a plaque. Mr. Iger commented that "the woman you saved will always remember your compassion and respect for life."
The Mineola Fire Department is proud of the heroic actions of Ex-Captain Thomas Bellizzi.
