Student Standouts

Missy Dunlop, 16

A bundle of talent and a musical background to be reckoned with, Missy Dunlop of Mineola High School isn’t just like anyone walking down a hallway. Thrust into the spotlight as soon as she could walk, Dunlop’s been performing ever since. On her list of the many plays she’s been involved in over the years are famous hits such as In the Heights, Oklahoma, and Almost, Maine.

Besides performing in shows, she plays on the girls varsity soccer team, treble choir, jazz ensemble, Italian club, the student service center as well as the a cappella group. “Last year, our group got asked to audition for America’s Got Talent and by far it was one of the most amazing experiences ever,” Dunlop said.

Dunlop feels the most rewarding thing is whenever she makes the high honor roll. “I feel like it proves to me that with all the busy things I do in my life, I am still capable of putting my education as a number one priority,” she says.

Andrew Pereira, 16

Andrew Pereira of Mineola High School makes it a point to not only achieve goals on the soccer field, but in every aspect of his life.

An avid member of the Student Service Center, Athletes Helping Athletes and Students Against Drunk Driving, Pereira also serves as the Student Organization Treasurer. A tri-athlete for three years now, soccer has still managed to top his list of favorite activities, earning him the George Gales Award in middle school. The award is presented to an athlete who excels at being not only sports minded but is scholarly and spirited as well.

Pereira feels that an active lifestyle, whether it be sports, arts or academics, is key to development. He plans to major in physical therapy and continue his soccer career in college.

“Definitely practice as much as you can,” he said. “Be confident in what you do and have fun with it.”
