Mineola resident Michael Cahill, 70, is one of the many seniors at Hofstra University’s Personal Enrichment in Retirement (PEIR) program, who are proving college doesn’t have an age limit. The PEIR program provides opportunities for intellectual stimulation, cultural
enrichment, and personal growth for retirees or semiretired individuals 55 years or older.
Cahill heard about PEIR from his daughter, who worked at Hofstra University, a few years before he retired. He spent his career as a program manager before 2010. Cahill knew that stimulating his mind and meeting new people was something that he wanted to do, so he joined.
Now, Cahill lectures others in the program.
“I love learning something new from each lecture, and I love hearing the different viewpoints of other members,” said Cahill. “It’s a very rewarding experience. I also love going home and researching a subject for a presentation that I’m doing, and then sharing my studies with others.”
When Cahill is attending lectures, he often incorporates his technical knowledge by managing the audio and visual services for those presenters.
Giving lectures and presentations about different subjects is one of Cahill’s favorite aspects of the program.
“I went to school for engineering. You don’t pay much attention to other subjects like literature and the arts in that area of study, so I can enjoy them now,” said Cahill.
One of Cahill’s first presentations detailed a topic he wanted to dig in to.
“When I first started, I had been working in Turkey, and when you go to Turkey you see statues of someone called Ataturk, so I decided to do my first presentation on who he was,” Cahill said. “It turned out everyone else also found his story fascinating too.”
Meeting new people and continuing to learn is something that Cahill plans on doing for quite a while.
“I love hearing what these fascinating people have to say. It is great. I will be at PEIR as long as I can locomote and talk.”
