The Mineola High School Drama Club and Thespian Troupe 276 will present Disney’s Mulan Jr. on Friday. May 9 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, May 10 at 2 and 7:30 p.m. In Asia, the story of Mulan is as familiar as Cinderella is in the United States. Mulan made its film debut in 1998 and was based on the story Fa Mulan by Robert D. San Souci.
Mineola High School’s eighth- and ninth-graders will present the story, in which the Fa family ancestors take you back to ancient China where Mulan (Erin Talty) is to meet the Matchmaker (Ana Pereira) and bring “Honor to Us All.” A nervous Mulan ruins the ceremony. During this time, Shan-Yu (Jameson Grenados) and the Huns are preparing to attack China.
Mushu (Raquel Galan), the funny sidekick sent by the Ancestors, watches over Mulan as she runs away and joins the army disguised as a boy in her father’s armor. Little does she know that meeting Captain Shang (Zachary Sloan), and enduring the events to follow, will change history.
“The drama department has gone to great lengths to create a production that looks as rich as its setting,” said Joseph Owens, acting supervisor of fine and performing arts in Mineola. “The musical numbers, choreography, gorgeous set and beautiful costumes will immediately draw the audience into the culture of ancient China.”
Tickets are $9 in advance by calling the fine arts office at 516-237-2625 or $10 at the door in Mineola High School at 10 Armstrong Rd. in Garden City Park. Tickets for children 10 and under are $5.
