There’s no rest for the East Williston Board of Trustees during the dog days of summer. The business of running the village rolls on, and the Board held its monthly meeting at
Village Hall on Monday, Aug. 12.
Not surprisingly, the future of the property at 8 Sumter Avenue was once again the topic of the night.
The village planning board is set to vote near the end of the month on whether to approve subdivision of the land. If that goes through, developer BNL would purchase the property from owner John Muzio, and build two houses on the land. If the developer is denied, control of the property would revert back to the village.
The village would then have to accept bids after deciding whether to demolish or repair the property. Many residents have been outspoken, saying that Muzio has been an absentee owner, letting the property deteriorate. Vandals and vermin seem to permeate the property, and residents simply want the matter resolved.
At the meeting, one resident once again asked why the process is taking so long. Mayor David Tanner said the planning board had put off a vote due to personal matters and summer vacation. All members need to be present for the vote, the planning board has decided.
Another resident wondered exactly how much legal authority the planning board has, and believes that only the board of trustees can make changes to the law. Mayor Tanner made it clear that the planning board has been vested with the proper authority to handle this matter, though he is the one who appoints the members in the first place.
The point was also raised that all eyes will be on the mayor in this matter, seeing as how he is now the head of the Nassau County Village Officials Association
The board says tree trimming around the village continues and anyone who needs it should contact Village Hall. This is a preemptive measure, as it is expected to be a stormy autumn.
National Grid continues the process of sleeving old gas lines around the area. This means the resulting street repairs continue as well.
Parking signage will be erected on Sagamore Avenue, as the board has approved a 103 feet strip of parking along the street, to begin around where the existing gate to the ballfield is.
The Town of North Hempstead receiver of taxes will be at the library on Sept. 26 to discuss the new STAR registration program. All property owners who currently receive the basic STAR exemption are required to register with the state in order to receive the exemption for the 2014-15 school year.
The next Board of Trustees meeting will be at Village Hall on Monday, Sept. 16 at 8 p.m.
