Family-owned community shops are a rare sight these days with Targets and Costcos dominating shopping centers. But with Foresto Tuxedo on Willis Avenue, you’ll get an experience that’s been available for 74 years in Mineola.
“It’s an honor to be able to compete with the big box stores and do good business,” owner Dominick Foresto said. “We give quality products and services; carry all the latest styles and we carry a lot that’s made in the United States.”
Foresto’s parents, Michael and Nancy, started the business in 1940 and it has remained in Mineola ever since. At one point, the empire had five locations.
Styles change with the times; Foresto flows with the trends, but stays true to its roots, offering top notch men’s wear, including Ralph Lauren, Jean Yves, Ike Behar, Perry Ellis, Calvin Klein, Hart Schaffner & Marx, Hickey Freeman and Jack Victor.
“Everything is a slimmer fit look now with slim fit pants and shirts,” said Foresto. “They all want to look like they just got off the red carpet at the Oscars. Everyone wanted to look like The Great Gatsby for a while.”
With prom season around the corner, Foresto’s recently held a fashion show at Mineola High School, where Dominick fit students with men’s wear. Foresto handles Chaminade High School’s graduation and has supplied tuxedos for proms in Mineola, Jericho, Syosset,
Great Neck, Wheatley, New Hyde Park and Westbury schools.
“When students come rent a tuxedo for their prom from Mineola High School, they get a $25 discount,” Foresto said. “It was great helping out the kids. They had a lot of fun.”
For Foresto, he prides himself on his shop having a variety of styles. If it’s for a wedding, prom, business function, etc., he wants Foresto’s to be the one-stop shop.
“We can provide formal wear, either rental or sale, for any social occasions,” he said. “While the Internet does help me with business, Amazon can’t provide what we do.”
Foresto’s is the preferred vendor for Oheka Castle, Crest Hollow Country Club, Jericho Terrace, Inn at New Hyde Park and Cherry Valley Country Club to name a few.
His biggest source of customers? Weddings. “I had someone come in on a Tuesday and the wedding was on a Friday and we took care of them,” Foresto said. “I did 10 tuxedos. I did them that Thursday and a few were picked up 11 a.m. that Friday morning. Having inventory and man power helps.”
Foresto’s was recently voted “Best Pick 2013” by popular bridal website The Knot and one of LIWeddings.com Best of 2014.
