The Mineola School Board will be meeting on Thursday, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. at Mineola High School, 10 Armstrong Road in Garden City Park, to discuss parameters for the 2010-2011 school budget.
According to Mineola Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael Nagler, who wrote about the budget on his blog “Nagler’s Notions” on the district website, simply rolling over the 2009-2010 budget to the 2010-2011 would cause the budget to increase by $3.5 million due to contractually mandated increase. Such a budget increase would increase the tax levy, which is the amount of the budget to be raised by property taxes, by 4.92 percent.
To decrease the tax levy by 1 percent would require a decrease in the budget of $700,000. In order for the school board to present a budget that reflects a 2.42 percent tax levy increase, which is what the 2009-2010 budget contained, $1.8 million would have to be cut from the roller-over budget. “A reduction of that magnitude would reduce many of the programs we currently enjoy,” wrote Dr. Nagler on his blog.
