Nassau County Energy Tax Kicks In

Republican Members of Legislature Seek Repeal

Just a little more than a week after Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi announced that his campaign for another term as county executive would be about a property tax revolution, the energy tax imposed on Nassau County residents kicked in on June 1.

Suozzi announced the need for the tax as part of his plan to close a projected deficit in the county’s budget. The 2.5 percent tax will be imposed on residential energy sources and servicing including gas, propane in containers of 100 pounds or more, electricity and steam as well as coal, fuel oil and wood for residential heating.

The law passed the Nassau County Legislature by a 10-9 margin with all Republican Legislators voting against the bill.

On Monday, Republican legislators, led by Minority Leader Peter Schmitt, held a press conference asking for a repeal of the home energy tax. “This is the most regressive kind of tax. People cannot avoid it. We must all cool our home, wash our clothes and turn on the lights,” said Legislator Richard Nicolello, who represents Mineola. “The tax will apply to all users in Nassau County and does not offer a reprieve for anyone suffering a hardship such as seniors on fixed incomes, the recently unemployed or those who already receive other forms of assistance.”

The Republican legislators have also started a petition drive to have the tax repealed. To sign the petition, please visit Schmitt’s website at or call 571-6212.
