Obituary - Herbert Polak

Herbert Polak died on May 3, 2011 at Sunharbor Manor in Roslyn Heights after a long illness.

He was born on June 20, 1922 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. His father owned a button factory that was started by his father. On May 10, 1940, Germany had invaded the Netherlands. On May 14, he escaped with his parents and younger brother on a Dutch fishing trawler and arrived in England two days later. They stayed until September, when they crossed the Atlantic to Halifax, Canada, and finally arrived in New York City on Dec. 7 to start a new life in the United States. He became a U.S. citizen in August 1949.

James F. Meehan, of Fairless Hills, died on April 27, 2011 at his home. He was 87. Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Meehan was a long time resident of Mineola before moving to Fairless Hills in July of 2008. He was a graduate of St. John’s University in New York.

John Whelan, 84, of Mineola, died on April 26, 2011. He was a native of Vallyvaskin, Miltown Malbay Co. Clare, Ireland, and a long time resident of Elmhurst, Queens – Ascension Parish. He was a retired RN from Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at NYU Hospital. He was a tireless worker for the promotion or Irish music, dance and culture. Beloved husband of Mary (Mae, nee Clancy). Dear father of Maureen, Therese Krische, James and Eileen Whelan and their spouses, John Bast, Paul Krische and Gail Whelan. Best pop-pop of Eddie, Sheila and Irene Krische and Shannon and Jack Whelan. Arrangements were made by the Cassidy Funeral Home, Mineola. Mass was offered at Corpus Christi Church on April 30. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery. Memorials to the Celtic music programs at Fordham University’s radio station, WFUV (www.wfuv.org) appreciated.

Babette R. Harper, a former resident of Mineola and teacher in the Port Washington School system, died at age 87 on April 25, 2011. She resided at Wake Robin, in Shelburne, VT from 1998 until her death. Babette was the only child of Cyril and Helen Harper and was born on March 15, 1924 in New York City. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in 1945 and taught for over 35 years before retiring in1988. Her love of travel took her all over the world and she was very involved in volunteer work, especially with the English Speaking Union and Hermandad. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Catherine’s in Shelburne, VT.
