Obituary: Jim Kearney

Jim Kearney

Jim Kearney, 88, of Summit, NY, died on March 8, 2011. Mr. Kearney was born March 4, 1923 in Scranton, PA. He was the son of James and Amelia (Dambacher) Kearney. He graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. He received his masters of business administration from Adelphi University.

Much of Jim’s career was classified having worked on radar systems for Sperry Rand (Unisys) and the Apollo moon landing project for Grumman Aerospace (Northrup/Grumman).

He was a WWII Army veteran of the South Pacific campaigns serving with the 989th Signal Corps in New Guinea, Luzon and Leyte. Jim also served as a commander of the American Legion Post 349 and was a member of VFW Post 1305.

He was a member of the Nassau County Auxiliary Police, retiring after 20 years. He also enjoyed astronomy and his amateur radio activities (WB2QDT is QRT). Living the last few years in Summit and the sense of community it gave him, he said was like returning to his childhood hometown. He never wanted to leave it.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Phyllis (Williamson) in April 1993. Jim is survived by his sister Betty Kearney of Leonia, NJ; his daughter Kerry Kearney of Menomonee Falls, WI; his son Glenn (Toni) Kearney of Massapequa; his son David Kearney of Summit, NY; his grandchildren, Christopher and Antoinette Kearney of Massapequa.

A private memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Jim’s name can be made to Summit Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, Mineola Volunteer Ambulance Corps or the American Cancer Society.
