The Village of Mineola lost an important part of the community on June 9, 2009 when Rae Sellitto died at the age of 86. Mrs. Sellitto was a loving sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
She was adored by members of the Mineola Leisure Club and Mineola Golden Age Club, where she made many friends among the seniors living in the village, and loved being a part of those organizations.
Mrs. Sellitto was born in Mineola at 233 Jackson Avenue and has lived in the village for the past 53 years. Family and friends meant a lot to Mrs. Sellitto and she never forgot an occasion when she could send a greeting card to let someone know how much she cared. “She always made sure everybody got their card,” said her son, Joseph R. Sellitto.
She met her husband Joseph while they both worked at Grumman and the couple got married while he was serving his country during World War II.
Community service ran in the Sellitto family. Her husband was chief of the Mineola Fire Department from 1970 to 1972 and her son, Joseph R., was chief of the department from 1987 to 1989. Her grandson Joseph was also a member of the Mineola Fire Department.
She is survived by her two brothers, John S. Davanzo and William Davanzo, as well as her son Joseph R., Jr. (Linda) and daughter Cindy Foster. She is also survived by her grandchildren Joseph, Andrea, Brandon and Raimee and her great-grandchildren Michael, Angelina, Nicholas and James.
Her warm smile will be missed by all those who knew her.
