George E. Ernst, 94, a resident at Willow Valley, formerly of Mineola, passed away peacefully on Oct. 16, 2011 at Arbor View at Willow Valley, Lancaster, PA. Born Dec. 23, 1916 in Queens, he was the son of the late George and Edna (Barden) Ernst. He was married to Gladys G. (Trafford) Ernst for over 68 years. A veteran of WWII, George proudly served with the U.S. Army.
George worked for over 40 years as a self-employed photographer retiring in 1985. He retired to Lancaster to watch his grandchildren grow up and immediately became involved in community activities. He was instrumental in starting the Millersville Council on Aging which is now the Millersville Senior Center. He delivered for over 15 years for MAMOW and was active with the Golden Growth Group and Helping Hands at the First United Methodist Church in Millersville.
In addition to his wife, he will be lovingly missed by a son, David T. Ernst, husband of Denise, of Astoria, NY, and a daughter, Janet E., wife of Stephen P. Gallion, of Lancaster; three grandchildren, Thomas A. Gallion, husband of Michelle, of Lancaster, Megan E. Guise, wife of Benjamin, of San Luis Obispo, CA, and Christopher D. Ernst, of Astoria, NY, and three great-grandchildren, Andrew, Dylan and Luke Gallion. He was preceded in death by a sister, Edna Pratt.
Funeral services will be held in the C. Jack Orr Auditorium in the Willow Valley Retirement Community, Lancaster, PA on Oct. 22 with the Rev. John A. Laughlin Sr. and Caring Pastor Mary A. Burger officiating. Private casket interment at Millersville Mennonite Cemetery. Kindly omit flowers.
