Obituary: Margaret Oswald, 98

Margaret M. Oswald, 98, of Oxford, MI died peacefully at home on Nov. 21. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward, her eldest son Robert, daughter-in law Carole and son-in-law Bill Bellairs. Oswald is survived by her children: Susan Bellairs of Oxford and Paul (Kathie) Oswald of Shohola, PA.

Oswald, the daughter of the late Augustine and Margaret Ziminski; was a 30-year Mineola resident and very active in Corpus Christi Church. She was born on March 14, 1915 in Hempstead.

Oswald was also preceded in death by her sisters; Catherine Moore, Mary Goodwin, Helen Sammons and brother William Ziminski.  She is survived by brother Paul Ziminski of Scottsdale, AZ and sister Jane (Griesel) Lemoine of Fort Pierce, FL.

She was called “Gram” or “Grammy” by her grandchildren: Pam, Aimee, Lori, Karrie and Jamie, and by her great-grandchildren; Zach, Alyssa, Tobey, Dustin, Megan, Brady, Logan and Parker.

Oswald, called Kiddie by friends and family, led a wonderfully full and independent life. She was part of the first graduating class at Hofstra University in 1939.  She took pride in being a professional Girl Scout and a camp counselor.  She was also a dedicated teacher at St. Joseph’s School in Garden City.

In her spare time, Oswald loved to sew and was an excellent seamstress and quilter. She was also known for her love of baking by family and friends.  The family counted on her to organize and plan special celebrations and events which included all the cooking and baking.

Oswald was constantly on the move, busy doing things her way and always including a little quote or saying to keep you laughing. After the death of Edward, her husband of 46 years, she moved to Southampton where she was a member of the Sacred Heart Parish and became a secular Franciscan, spreading simple kindness where she could. In 1997 Margaret moved to Oxford where she spent the remaining 16 years near her family.

The family is requesting that any donations be made to the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse located at 775 West Drahner Road, Oxford, MI where Oswald loved to attend mass every Sunday morning.
