Around the Town with Lou - September 24, 2010

Carolyn McCarthy had little interest in politics before Colin Ferguson killed her husband and badly wounded her son in the LIRR Massacre. She soon became a well-known figure fighting for gun control and accepted the Democratic nomination to run for the House of Representatives. Since then she has branched out to fight for difference causes such as the struggle against childhood obesity. She also has fought for universal health insurance and was an enthusiastic supporter of the Health Reform Bill. As a nurse, she was particularly interested. She said, “I know this bill is not perfect, but the kinks will be worked out before it goes into full effect in 2014.” She also has battled to improve schools and to stop drunk driving. McCarthy said she thinks all cars will have breathalyzers by 2015. She has made little headway on gun control, but at least she has gotten even the NRA to agree to close the loophole that allowed the mentally unbalanced to purchase firearms. She lives in Mineola and has served 14 years in congress. Her Republican opponent in November will be Francis Becker.

A man who is a regular buyer of lotto tickets at the Whistle Stop won $5,000. Owner Mary Ann Fearon said he lives in Mineola. Incidentally, Mary Ann and her husband Pete took a three-day holiday to take their son to college in Connecticut.

Sleepy’s big store in the shopping center is gone. The rest of the places in the center like Panera Bread and Maxell’s seem to be doing well. Sleepy’s, of course, is a big chain and the other stores seem to be doing okay.

Joe and Ann Tartaglia are big hockey fans and have not yet decided if they are going to buy their season tickets again or not. Joe is retired from the Mineola Water Department.

Hats off to the great job done by our meter people Stuart Goldstein, Laurie McCarren, Andy Ruggeiro and Richard Zbikowski. They keep traffic moving, add to the village’s revenue and do it without upsetting too many people.

Ron and Kathy Woyciechowski live in North Carolina having left Mineola four years ago. Ron still roots for his Yankees, The Jets and Giants and the New York Rangers.

Amilia Fitterer lives in The Wheatley House in East Williston. Her late husband Joe was postmaster of Mineola for 14 years. She was the former Amilia Goldsmith.

Personally I feel that building a Mosque close to Ground Zero is a terrible idea. How can anything that upsets so many people be a good idea? This has nothing to do with religious freedom; just build the Mosque someplace else.

Gus Ankis who lives on IU Willets Road in Searington sends me copies of his newsletter every couple of months. As he writes about world affairs, I can’t really use his notes. Like me, Gus served in the combat engineers in WWII. He later went to Stevens Institute and graduated as a civil engineer and was one of the builders of the World Trade Center.

Leo Dobbs was at the pool on the final day. He was telling me about the bad flooding problem he had on Bruce Terrace. When we have a heavy downpour, his basement is always flooded. Bruce Terrace is the lowest lying area of Mineola. Also enjoying the final day at the pool were Bill and Barbara Grant. Bill is a local realtor.

Charles Semek of 2nd Street sent me an amusing letter regarding rats, English and Spanish languages. As I speak both English and Spanish, I enjoyed his tongue-in-cheek notes.

It was hot this summer, but have you ever been to Phoenix in August? When we were there it was 116 degrees. Dry heat or not, Arizona is roasting in the summer. Its very name means in Spanish “land without water.” Most of the early explorers came from the dry, desert like land of Southern Spain. Arizona, however, is the gateway to our wonderful Grand Canyon.

A picture in the NY Post of a lunch between Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears was captioned “Bimbo Summit.”
