(From a statement made by Mineola District Council of PTA members Robin Bischoff and Cindy Velez to the Board of Education on Nov. 18.)
Board trustees are invited to PTA meetings at every level, every month. Parents and community members attend Board of Education meetings twice a month. Throughout this long and emotional process of school reconfiguration, the Board of Education has been repeatedly commended for its efforts to consider feedback from the community.
It is therefore astonishing to have to read on-line and in local press, statements made that were at no point brought to our very own community for consideration.
The trustees of the Board of Education are elected by this community to look after the sound education and well-being of our children. This same community deserves respect and plain speaking, in the appropriate forum.
As PTA leaders, our Unit Presidents are held to certain standards when carrying out the duties of the offices to which they are elected by their peers.
“You must be careful that you always represent the PTA accurately, fairly, and with dignity. If you do not, the PTA and, ultimately, the children will suffer.” (NYS PTA Resource Guide).
If whatever guidelines and standards the Board of Education follows when conducting their business do not provide the necessary compass for the trustees, keep in mind that the community as a whole – and that includes our children – is watching.
Mineola PTAs will continue to work on behalf of and for the good of our children in the community in which we all live and learn.
