Letter: Cut in State Aid Will Only Hurt, Not Help Mineola Schools

We are writing this letter on behalf of PEACE – People for Excellence, Affordability, and Commitment to Education. PEACE is comprised of a number of community members from throughout the Mineola School District. We continue to be involved and committed to issues, both financial and educational, that affect the students of our district and the community as a whole.

Mineola has gone through the long and difficult process of deciding to close two buildings to cut costs while saving the programs so vital to students’ educational experience. We succeeded in containing costs last year by passing a budget with a 2.3 percent tax increase, our fourth consecutive year of 2.5 percent or under.

It was announced that Governor Cuomo’s proposed budget includes a cut in state aid to the Mineola School District - one of only 12 districts on Long Island facing a decrease. Each of our neighboring school districts has increases in his proposal.  The proposed decrease to Mineola is the third highest cut on the Island.

Every dollar cut in aid is a dollar added to the tax levy. We would like to appeal to all parents and community members in the Mineola School District to write to our elected officials to express your dissatisfaction.  The District Council of PTAs in Mineola has accommodatingly posted a link which includes the names and addresses of the elected officials as well as form letters that are available for your use. It can be accessed at http://www.mineola
