Around the Town with Lou: July 16, 2012

Editor’s Note: Lou Sanders, who has his journalism degree from NYU, and his wife, Grace, founded the Mineola American in 1952, giving the village its first successful newspaper. Lou and Grace have lived in Mineola for 58 years, and his popular column is a signature feature of this paper.

“Ship Tight” is the way Kyle Teemsma, the pool director and the two supervisors, Carl Santelmo and Catherine Lusardi run the facility. Tom and Molly Azzolini live on Clinton Avenue. Molly has a friend in England who saw her name in this column and called her. The two ladies now talk weekly.

Kim Martone Collins of Roosevelt Avenue works for County Executive Edward Mangano.

The Newsday headline regarding the ill-fated boat accident off Oyster Bay, quoted the “driver” of the vessel. Boats are piloted, never driven, so even Newsday can make an error.

Peggy May and Judi Roche enjoyed lunch at Cugini. Both work for Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy.

Robert’s Men’s Shop has just about everything for men and boys. This nearly 60-year-old business is ably run by Kathy Whitley and Bob and Cathy Seewaltd.

Grace Weismantel, formerly of Mineola and daughter Karen Mulqueen joined Grace and I for lunch at Cugini’s.

Harry Montoux served as a Nassau County cop for 35 years in the Seventh Precinct. He used to live on Demott Street but now lives on Beebe Road. He has two sons, Gary and Ken.

At Cugini’s we met Rose, Karen and Lena Svero, Karen Logreico and Virginia and Arthur Reginio.

Judy Flanagan was visiting her good friend Dr. Jennifer LaMonica.

Beverly Donnelly is at the pool every day at 8 a.m. She does 30 laps. Hey, that’s only 27 more than I do. Her husband Tony, head usher at Corpus Christi Church, is content to watch Bev.

Troy Gordan, the music director at Corpus Christi Church, has a great voice.

George Kromencher, that excellent mechanic at Yopps, attends the same church as do Carolyn and Mario Berta of Birchwood Court.

Our middle granddaughter, Kim Sanders, married Dr. Frank LaRosa in May. Kim is in her last year of medical school, so we will have two doctors in the family.
