County Executive’s Column - September 4, 2009

Ceremony to Commemorate 9/11

On Wednesday, Sept. 9, I will be joined by the Nassau County 9/11 Memorial Committee, along with victims’ families and friends, at a sunset ceremony to commemorate the eighth anniversary of the events of September 11, 2001. The ceremony will take place at the September 11th Memorial in Eisenhower Park.

The memorial, which features a wall with the names of the 344 Nassau residents who died in the World Trade Center and on Flight 93, was a tremendous undertaking. From the contest held in the very beginning to find a fitting design, to the donations that poured in from hundreds of local residents and businesses and to the over 500 union members from Long Island’s building trades who volunteered thousands of hours to help build it, our community came together to ensure that Nassau County had a fitting memorial.

The memorial also features two semitransparent aluminum towers, representing the World Trade Center towers, rising 30 feet from a fountain, and also contains two pieces of steel from the World Trade Center’s wreckage. It is truly a work of art, and represents a day that will forever be marked as a turning point in American history. The tragedy of September 11th has left an indelible mark on our county as well as our nation, and it is hard to believe that eight years have passed since that Tuesday morning. Each year since, we’ve gathered as a community to reflect on what this means to us all, to our nation and our world, and to affirm our belief in ourselves, our nation and in the basic goodness of the human spirit.

I am proud to honor all the Nassau County victims who tragically lost their lives eight years ago. It is also my hope that this memorial will forever help people to grieve and to make certain that the events of September 11 are always foremost in our thoughts.

I invite everyone to attend our sunset ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. at the September 11 Memorial, located at Parking Field 6. For more information, please call the Nassau County Office of Constituent Affairs at (516) 571-6000.
