Around The Town With Lou

Editor’s Note: Lou Sanders, who has his journalism degree from NYU, and his wife, Grace, founded the Mineola American in 1952, giving the village its first successful newspaper. Lou and Grace have lived in Mineola for 58 years, and his popular column is a signature feature of this paper.

Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter Day Saints, the Morman Church which opened at the corner of Second Street and Willis Avenue is the fifth house of worship on this street. The Catholic Church is here, the Lutheran, Temple Sholam Chabot and The Grace Church. We can see why Willis Avenue is called “The Street of Churches.”

Corpus Christi’s choir gives us wonderful music every Sunday. It is composed of Greg Tranchina, Pat Tobin, Tom Murphy, Sindy Schmitt, Christina Nunez, Dolores Mangold, Janet Langer, Irene Demedeiros, Michael Vezzi, Mario Valdellon, Tom Schmitt, William Boerner, Leanne Thompson, Adriara Mello, Lisa Madsen, Maria Des Santos, Janet Bromfield, Katherine Brautigam, Marta Bertoni and the leader Franni Luisi. Conducted by Troy Gordon, they do a fine job.

Mike Egan and his son Jason are visiting from Australia. Mike is the son of Larry and Luba Egan and brother to Larry Egan, Jr. He is an attorney and he and his wife Marie live in Mineola.

Nick Martine, Nick Jr., Melissa Martine and Mike McGowen dined at the Davenport.

Former Mayor Ed Smith and wife Evelyne are both home in Connecticut. Both have spent recent weeks in the hospital. Still hoping to visit Mineola in the near future.

Marge Wood of Mineola is a good customer of Franwin Pharmacy. She and Joe live on Jackson Avenue.

Maria, Americo and Michael Cunha of Westbury Avenue are good parishioners of Corpus Christi Church.

Karen and Bill Wiley live in Williston Park and own a company called “Word Power.” They buy wine from Park Wines and Liquors.

Former Mayor Bob Hinck, wife Pat and Carl Marchese enjoyed Christmas eve dinner at Cugini’s.

Former Mineola parking enforcer Frank Syracuse is now a doorman at the Windsor in Garden City.

Kudos for Channel 11 as again this year they brought us five hours of the Christmas Carols and the Yule Log on Christmas morning without any commercials.

Patty Liguori works for KTR Lighting Co. She and her husband live on Florence Road and she used to work for Creative Lighting. KTR is located at 35 E. Jericho Turnpike, the building that formerly housed the Mineola American before Grace and I sold the paper to Karl Anton.

Mike Balboni formerly of Shortridge Drive and now of East Williston, is a managing partner with Redland Consulting Agency specializing in homeland security. Mike s a former state senator and NY State deputy secretary for public safety.

Jay Leno read a menu for a Chinese restaurant that listed their “peeking duck.” I guess it looks back at you and their “one ton” soup. Man, that’s a lot of soup.
