Around The Town With Lou

Editor’s Note: Lou Sanders, who has his journalism degree from NYU, and his wife, Grace, founded the Mineola American in 1952, giving the village its first successful newspaper. Lou and Grace have lived in Mineola for 59 years, and his popular column is a signature feature of this paper.

Ravens fans were full of hope at the Kiwanis Club’s Super Bowl Breakfast. Among those we met there were Lois Hanson, Zoila and Joshua Giron, Ed Schutz, Audrey Meinking, Barry Dworkin, Peggy and Paul May, Michael, Jennifer, Sean, Erin and Kiera Reddy, Pete Owens, Gloria Sena, John Collins, james Burdi, Henry Maslon, Bob and Dick Rosenthal, Marvin Kamiel, Joe and Karen Laino, Joe Tartaglia and Joe Jr., Tom Dwyer, Tony Natala, Neil and Madeline Pilota, George Dunhan, Matt Scala, Dom Giordano, Robbin Valentine, Dr. Ann Forte, Scott Fairgrieve, Mayor Scott Strauss, Joe Galante, Carl Marchese, Bill Urianek, Lillian and Tom Riemore, Gabe Parajos, Luisa Felipe, Dan McAllister and Mike Peiffer.

Jim McGowan is a Third Precinct cop and the security man at Winthrop Hospital. Jim lives in Mineola.

Jim Bernstein is the new copy editor at Anton. He was formerly with Newsday.

Sam and Dolores Donato live on Pomander Road. Sam was formerly the business manager at MHS. He was also a lay reader at Corpus Christi Church. Dolores was in the church choir. The family switched parishes and now go to St. Aidans. Now Dolores sings with their choir.

Ed and Ava Pancella like to shop at King Kullen. Ed was once the Grand Knight of the Corpus Christi Council Knights of Columbus.

Nick Siciliano is a retired mailman and now works for Lafayette Pharmacy. His wife Barbara was born in our village.

Mike Robinson lives in Williston Park. He used to own a large toy store on Willis Avenue.

When they discovered the remains of the English King Richard III, who was killed in a battle some 500 years ago, they were buried under what is now a parking lot. David Letterman said, “You talk about longtime parking!”

What a great neighbor Grace and I have in Sean Burke. During the recent big snow, Sean was right there to shovel us out. He and his wife Donna and son Ryan live across the street. Another fine neighbor is Gavin Duffy who lives next to Sean Gavin and his wife Irene are always ready to help us. The Duffys have two sons, Cody and Tige.

Bill Green, the Chamber president, will be visiting Hong Kong shortly. Bill, a furrier, is going for a trade show.

Jay Leno saw an ad, “Come visit our hysterical house.” I guess it also has a lot of history associated with it!

Amilia Fitterer used to live in Mineola but now resides at the Wheatley House in East Williston. Some may remember her late husband, Joe, who was the postmaster of Mineola. She was the former Amilia Goldsmith.

Bill Hodgson tells me his mom Eileen has lived on Marcellus Road for 62 years. Bill works for NOMC, a company located in East Meadow.
