I have been a business owner in Mineola for 40-plus years and want to say how much I like the new research center Winthrop is building on the corner of 2nd Street and Mineola Boulevard. It brings a bright modern look to the entire downtown area; kudos to Winthrop. For us old-timers that can remember, it’s a big improvement from the Bohack
Supermarket that was once on that site.
I was driving north on the Mineola Boulevard Bridge the other day and I was looking forward to seeing the view of the new building as people will see it as they enter Mineola from the south. It was then that I noticed the old “Going Sign” on top of the building in front of the new structure, partially blocking the view of the new structure.
I remember the “Going Sign” was there when I first got to Mineola, in 1972, and was probably there long before that. At that time it was bright white and red with the wonderful words, “Welcome to Mineola” in big neon lights and had a clock that showed everyone the time. It was majestic.
Unfortunately it has suffered with time and the “Going Sign” is no longer what it was. It’s a sad mess now, no longer saying “Welcome to Mineola” and the clock has no hands.
Aside from its own malaise, it is now blocking the full view of the new way we are welcoming people to Mineola, with Winthrop’s beautiful new building.
Can the village get it taken down? I think it’s finally time for the “Going Sign” to go.
