Editor’s Note: Lou Sanders, who has his journalism degree from NYU, and his wife, Grace, founded the Mineola American in 1952, giving the village its first successful newspaper. Lou and Grace have lived in Mineola for 59 years, and his popular column is a signature feature of this paper.

That dynamite gal, Sheila Retattaliata, will be among those entertaining us at the Downtown Street Fair of the Mineola Chamber of Commerce, Sunday, Sept. 8. Hundreds come to the fair. If you can sing or dance, call the chamber.

Ella Schmidt and Marie McWilliams are always so helpful at Corpus Christi Church.

That should be an exciting race for town clerk of North Hempstead. It will be a three -way battle with Wayne Wink, the Democrat; Leslie Gross, the Republican; and Joe Wood of Jackson Avenue. The Conservative, Gross, thinks she has a good chance. Formerly a Democrat and now a Republican, she is so well known. Wink says he has a good chance with the split opposition and Wood thinks he can win against two. He says they are both liberals. We shall see!

Russ Miller swims 72 laps, one mile almost daily at the pool. At 70 years-old, that is amazing.

Our school will protect your kids’ furniture. Jay Leno says that they meant “future.” I guess nobody proofreads these ads.

Msgr. Robert Batule, pastor of Corpus Christi, spoke of Tony Melendez who was born in Latin America without arms because his mother was a drug addict. From an early age he

loved music and learned to play instruments with his feet. Faith and will can do great things, the pastor said.

Pat Carfagno does such a great job as a lay reader at Corpus Christi.

Ken and Gerry Aiello live on Beebe Road. He was in banking and then retired from a company that made strings for musical instruments.

Dan and Tom Flynn like to visit other parishes on occasion. Recently they were at St. Ignatius in Hicksville.

Sandy Pusey and her brother Bill Henrichs always do such a good job at Kucks Delli.

Dr. Barry Ginbel of Willis Avenue vacationed in Peru and Brazil fly fishing in the Amazon River Valley.

Christina and Steve of White Road work in the area. She, for Haller-Zaremba Insurance, and he for UPS.

Marion Huether of Burkhard Avenue used to work at the Mineola School cafeteria.

Pat Hoyett lives with her dad, Joe McCarthy, on Latham Road. Joe is 98-years-old and still takes an interest in village affairs.

Pat Cuenta has worked for Mr. Jay for 33 years. She and Leo live in Albertson.

Theresa Saks works at CVS. She and Bruce live on Latham Road.

Lynn and Gary La Pointe live on Wellington Road. Lynn was a teacher at Jackson Avenue School. She was born in Mineola 69 years ago.
