Around The Town With Lou

Editor’s Note: Lou Sanders, who has his journalism degree from NYU, and his wife, Grace, a graduate of Adelphi, founded the Mineola American in 1952, giving the village its first successful newspaper. Lou and Grace have lived in Mineola for 59 years, and his popular column is a signature feature of this paper.

 

Happy people filled the Jericho Terrace for the “Taste and Style” of the Mineola Chamber of Commerce. Among the 319 people were Dr. Vincent and Marie Conte, John Davanzo and his daughter Mary, Mayor Scott Strauss, Dennis Walsh, Pat Salmon, Terrence Timlin, Chamber President Bill Greene, Ray Sikorski, Bob Rosenthal, Paul Cusato, Tony Lubrano, Steve Ford, Marty and Joy Wyler, Dorothy Campbell, Dolores Mangold, Lillian Barnola, Will Havron, Tom Jeffersberg, Gary Katz, Rich Forestano, John Carroll, George Durham, Regina Cuchino and Senator Jack Martins.

Pat and Susan Swords are newcomers to the village and now live on Mineola Boulevard.

Vincent Bergius was born at Nassau Hospital, now called Winthrop. Vincent worked for Grummans. He and his wife Mary live on Garfield Avenue.

Maryann Burns won the $3,000 prize at Corpus Christi Church. She and Bruce will be celebrating.

Jaime Braga was among the waiters serving dinner at the Davenport on Thanksgiving. They served 500 dinners in all. They served 630 last year, but at that time many south shore restaurants were closed due to Hurricane Sandy. Jaime

has lived on Barwick Boulevard for 31 years.

Eleanor Rigby’s held a fundraiser for the family of firefighter Pat Brown. Many came in honor of Pat, who was among those killed on 9/11.

Gloria and Joe Carney of Brown Street are among a group traveling to Rome with Father Tomaz Gomide.

Cindy and Mark Warshawsky live in Albertson but went to school in Mineola.

Joyce and Buzzy Tenney live in the village. Buzzy works for the New York Racing Association which takes him to Belmont, Aqueduct and Saratoga. Lucky guy.

Carol and George Kick live on Elderberry Road. George is a retired Third Precinct police sergeant. They have lived in town for 25 years.

Tommy and Alice Linehan reside on Linden Road. Tommy is an electrician. They have lived in the village for 63 years.
