On Jan. 21, Barbara Mattina will retire after 35 years of service to the village and Mineola will say goodbye to one of the best civil servants it has ever known.
I first met Barbara in 1975 when I was the clerk of the Village Justice Court and Barbara came to work in the village as a clerk typist. She was one of the best workers I ever had. For the 20 years, she worked in the justice court, she was totally dedicated to her duties and the people of Mineola. She was someone you could always count on. She seldom took time off and was always there when you needed her. Barbara could always be depended upon to help anyone who walked into the court. She was loved and respected by everyone on the court staff as well as the people of Mineola. I was so impressed with her performance that I recommended she take over the clerk of the court position when I retired in 1995. However, Barbara declined and instead took a job in the building department where she has served faithfully for 10 years. She returned to the justice court in 2004 and has been there since. I know the village will miss this woman who has given so much to our community. I want to wish her a very happy retirement and all the best to a wonderful colleague and friend.
