Letter: To Ms. Napolitano And Members of The Community

We are somewhat perplexed by your letter in the May 26 edition of the Mineola American. It is interesting that you were able to divine intent in our previous letter to petition to keep Hampton Street School open.  At no point in our letter did we express a view on a particular school staying open (be it Hampton Street or otherwise) or a particular configuration option.  It is even more surprising you were able to divine this intent even though over 100 different residents signed the letter that was presented to the board and of these, over 25 were residents who live in areas where children do not go to Hampton.

A few others do not even have school age children.  Perhaps your subscription to the Psychic Friends Network is of a higher quality than ours (and if so, you must inform us as to what tier of service you use so that we too can become enlightened) but we are quite surprised to learn that there was a single view in the letter about closing or not closing a particular school being expressed by this diverse group of residents.

What we did find in common with the people who did sign the letter and a good number of others we have talked to in the community is the desire for more information about configuration options.  While you assert that the concerns raised in the letter “…are not issues that we have not already thought of or considered,” your letter curiously fails to respond to any of the questions raised.  If you have already thought of these concerns, wouldn’t it have been simpler to provide the information for the community to read rather than to pretend to be able to define the motives of a group of over 100 different residents?

Answers to the questions posed would be a good start, but only a start.  In any event, we simply renew our request for more specific information about all configuration options, for all schools in the district.  While your letter makes a number of statements about representing the entire community, we would ask that you and the board consider completely informing the entire community as part of this job.  We look forward to learning from you in the future what the intent of this letter was.
