Shorthanded Mini-Mustangs Undefeated Run Ends

The Girls U10 Mini-Mustangs finished their solid second place season at 6-1-2 following a gut-wrenching, last minute, 3-2 loss at Oceanside. With Jillian Palma and Brianna O’Brien unavailable, the Mini-Mustangs began the day shorthanded. Down two goals early in the game, Mineola relentlessly attacked the Oceanside defense, resulting in a late first half penalty kick that Christen Patalano hammered into the corner of the net.

The Mineola defense had a strong second half, led by Shannon Durham and Meghan Lafaye. Cara Kennedy made three tough saves to keep her team in the game and with 15 minutes remaining, Michelle Viola’s great throw-in and Katie Russelman and Emma Feimer’s passing led to another Patalano score to tie the game at two.

Earlier in the second half, Mineola lost star forward Allison Lamonica and the terrific and versatile Casey Conners, who replaced Lamonica at the forward position, to injuries. Mineola played without substitutes the rest of the way and the fresh Oceanside forwards were able to fire home the game-winner with under a minute to play.
