In a tight game that featured four tie scores, Mineola prevailed 6-5 over Harborfields. Mineola (5-2) started slowly and fell behind 2-0.
Early in the second quarter Aidan McMahon (1 goal, 1 assist), who went 5-for-5 on face-offs, picked up the loose ball and found Aidan Tice (1 goal, 2 GB) on the crease, who didn’t hesitate on a hard shot and scored. After Harborfields went ahead 3-1, Jon Salamone caused a turnover, scooped up by Matt Ferrone (1 assist, 4 GB) where he ran up the field and fed Sean Pecora who blasted one past the Harborfields goalie to make it a one-score game.
In the third quarter, Kieran Hendry (2 assists, 7 GB) won the face-off and made a spectacular feed as he was falling down to Adam Campbell (1 goal), who launched a shot to the upper left corner of the goal. After Renner saved a shot, he found Hendry on an outlet pass and cross field to Brian Cummings (1 goal, 4 GB), who split two defenders and ripped a low shot to tie the game.
Going into the fourth quarter, Mineola was behind 4-3. Goalie Dylan Renner (12 saves) made three sensational saves to give Mineola momentum going into the final three minutes of the game. Defensively, the “Super Six” limited Harborfields to just one goal in the fourth quarter, as they started dominating on ground balls (GB), collecting 15. The “Super Six” were led by Jon Salamone (5 GB), Brendan Shannon (4 GB), Brandon Behar (3 GB), and Joe Contrastano (3 GB).
All four defensemen cleared the ball out of their end and into Mineola’s offensive zone. Offensively, Mineola found an extremely tough Harborfields defense that kept the Maroon team on the perimeter for most of the first half.
With three minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Jake Karant (2 GB) fired a shot on goal and Kevin Graf (1goal, 2 assists), battling three Harborfields’ defenders picked up the loose ball and slipped it past the goalie to put Mineola into the lead for the first time, 5-4. After a Mineola turnover, Harborfields came down and scored to tie up the game with one minute, 30 seconds left to play.
On the ensuing face-off, McMahon raked it out and Hendry scooped up the loose ball, passed it to Brendan McDonough (2GB), who fed Graf and he carried the ball to the left side and found McMahon who made a backdoor cut into the slot and blasted home the winning goal. Game balls went to Graf and Pecora.
