The Mineola Mustang varsity football team defeated the Clarke Rams this week by a score of 33-14 on Saturday, Oct. 26, clinching a playoff spot. On the opening possession, the Mustangs drove the length of the field only to fumble into the end zone and lose a touchdown opportunity. They proceeded to give up a long touchdown pass, trailing 7-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Mustangs then scored with a 25-yard touchdown pass form Vinny Bieniek to Brian Smith.
The Mineola defense led by middle linebacker Ryan Eccher and defensive end Edien Hincappie stopped the Rams on three plays, giving Mineola the ball back at the two-minute warning. Bieniek connected with Smith again for a 30-yard touchdown to give the Mustangs a 14-7 lead.
The defense shut down Clark again on the opening drive of the third quarter. The Mustangs then increased their lead on a 33-yard scoring pass from Bienik to Peter McCormack to go a head 21-7.
The Mustangs continued to score as Kyle Dunleavy ran one in from six yards out and Bieniek scored from five yards out to extend the lead to 35-14.
Bieniek completed 8-of-14 passes for 183 yards and 3 touchdowns. Smith caught 3 for 63 yards and two scores, Justin Oommen had 2 catches for 44 yards. The Mustangs racked up 175 yards on the ground as the offensive line of Chris Martin, Tim Natale, Matt Diaz, Matt, Barroca, Edien Hincappie and tight end Justin Oommen opened up running lanes.
