The Mineola-Portuguese Soccer Club (MPSC) of the Mineola Portuguese Club received a Citation from Legislator Rich Nicolello on a recent Sunday game during a halftime ceremony.
Nicolello’s visit was the highlight of an event-filled day for the team, beginning with the Mineola-Portuguese’s development team dedicating their earlier game to breast cancer awareness by wearing pink athletic accessories. The MPSC’s premier team dedicated their game to their guest of honor, Legislator Nicolello, and his own accomplishments in sports. Both teams won their regular season games 3-0 against Three Village.
The team openly applauded Legislator Nicolello, stating that his commitment to the community and amateur athletics showed a strong fundamental characteristic. Nicolello, former New Hyde Park Wild Cats coach himself, spoke to the team about improving the amount and quality of fields in his district for use by teams like this one.
“It is great to acknowledge these players, most of whonm grew up through community programs like the Mineola Athletic Association and PAL, who continue to practice the sport, and in so doing. promote an essence of sportsmanship that is a joy to watch. It is great to see local companies like Rite-Way Construction, andgosports.com, and NYCON Supply support programs like these which run completely on sponsorship dollars.”
Team vice president Gabriel Marques said, “We just go out there and play our hearts out every Sunday, so when the team found out that our legislator was going to drop by and recognize us, we were thrilled.”
Nicolello was also honored during the event for his service to the community by Marco DaFonte (team president) and Jack DaFonte (team director of futebol operations). Legislator Nicolello was presented with an autographed team jersey and a championship medal, the same ones awarded to players and staff during the 2009 season.
