The Mineola Mustangs’ boys winter track team won its second Conference 6 Championship in the past three years on Sunday, Jan. 26. The team a scored of 103 points, defeating Seaford, Malvernw, East Rockaway, Wheatley, Cold Spring Harbor, Friend’s Academy, Locust Valley, Clarke, and Oyster Bay.
Conference champions for individual events included Jake Tavernite in the 1000M, Dylan Bestler in the 600M, and the 4x400 meter relay team of Dylan Bestler, John Murray, Anthony Cueter and Chris Mueller. All Conference honors, for placing top three in their respective events, went to Rob Lang in the 600M and 1000M, Andrew Pereira in the shot put, Tommy Farrell in the high jump and John Murray in the triple jump.
The Mineola Mustangs’ varsity bowling team rolled a school best 923 and 2,455 series to defeat Carle Place High School on Saturday, Jan. 25. They did they finished the season with a record of 9-3, good enough for second place in the conference, earning them a ticket to the Nassau County Team Tournament, for which only the top 16 teams qualify.
The Mustangs started in 13th place, overall with a 738.2 average. The first match of the week was against Oyster Bay recently. The Mustangs swept them behind the strong bowling of freshman Tony Macchietto(228 high game) 659 series and Junior Will Andrade’s (215 high game) 551 series. The team rolled an 843 in the first game of the match. Freshman Ryan Sellinger chipped in with a 179 and Senior John Lusardi rolled a 221 to match Tony and Will’s high game totals.
The next match was for second place against our cross-town rival Carle Place. The Mustangs had not beaten Carle Place this year. Despite Lusardi’s 220 in the first game, the Mustangs lost 796-752.
The Mustangs in a tight, second match squeaked out a victory defeating Carle Place by a count of 780-773, leading the way was Macchietto(214) and Lusardi (235). In the final game, the Mustangs rolled a school record 923, with Sellinger (203), Lusardi (233), Macchietto (239) and Danny Ferreira bowling his record high game of 248 to clinch win.
The Mineola girls winter track and field team competed at the Conference VI Championship at St. Anthony’s High School on Sunday Jan. 26. The girls finished fifth out of nine teams, amassing 51 points. After finishing in ninth place with only 10 points last year, the girls showed a wealth of growth and improvement from last year’s winter season.
The girls compiled all-conference honors in multiple events. Senior captain Marissa Cotroneo earned all-conference in the 3000m run. Junior Jenna Pareti was conference champion in the high jump and all-conference in the triple jump as well. Junior Amy Wetzel finished third in the 1500m racewalk to earn all-conference honors as well.
The Mineola Girls Varsity Bowling team split its last two matches, defeating Locust Valley 3-0 while losing to Carle Place 2-1 during the week of Jan. 13-19.
Leading the Mustangs over Locust Valley was Sophomore Marissa Buonincontro who bowled her highest series of the season with a 534 along with her high game of the year of 203. Seniors Lauren Pucci and Meghan McCabe added high games of 163 and 156 respectively while sophomore Mackenzie Schnaufer had a 146.
In the loss to Carle Place, the Lady Mustangs fought back after dropping the first two games to win the third. High games for Mineola were seniors Pucci with a 169, Samantha Mendes with a 161 and McCabe with a 133, while sophomore Buonincontro had a 169.
The junior varsity squad had the same identical split beating Locust Valley 3-0 and losing to Carle Place 2-1. High games against Locust valley were sophomores Samantha Henrichs and Angela Steinmann who both rolled a 139. Against Carle Place, the high games were from Sophomore Angela Steinmann with a 146 and Sophomores Lizzy Caccavale and Zoleil Gallardo who both rolled a 139 and Catherine Leong with a 135.
The last week of the season saw the Mineola Girls varsity bowling team split their last two matches on Jan. 20. The girls defeated Oyster Bay 3-0 by racking up their highest pin total of the season. Senior Samantha Mendes had her highest series of the year with a 523 along with her high game of 194. Other high games were by Marissa Buonincontro with a 177, Lauren Pucci with a 176 and Meghan McCabe with a 145.
In the position round, the Mustangs went against Carle Place to battle for second place in the conference. Mineola came up short 2-1. Senior Lauren Pucci scored a 195 and Sophomore Marissa Buonincontro a 182.
They also qualified to participate in the County Team Championships by placing 12th in the county. This is the second year in a row that the varsity team will participate in the County Championships. Mineola will also be represented in the Individual All-County Championship with Buonincontro, who qualified with an season average of 162.3, which will be held at Garden City Bowl on Feb 8. The junior varsity girls bowling team ended their season with a victory over Oyster Bay 3-0. Sophomore Catherine Leong had her highest series of the year with a 403 along with a high game of 156. The JV ended up with a record of 8-3 which put them in second place in Conference 2.
