The Mineola girl’s Varsity and JV basketball program received the Nassau County Girl’s Basketball Officials Association Sportsmanship Award. Out of 56 participating schools, the Lady Mustangs scored the highest as coaches and teams are rated by the official after each game.
Respect of officials, respect for visiting team, and coach’s behavior on the sideline are just a few of the areas that are scored. This is the third time Mineola High School Girl’s has been honored with this award.
The last time was in the 2009-10 season, where the Lady Mustangs also were conference champions. Varsity players include Kati Priolo, Samantha Venus, Samantha Pastore, Lizzy Brown, Kelly Behan, Gabby Jurksas, Erica Barron, Mallory Donelan, Monika Dharia, Erin
Beatty, and Jules Caruso, coached by Denise Zunno. JV players include, Lisa Burns, Tina Conway, Patricia Fernandez, Kathleen Guda, Velencia Hurd, Megan Kelly, Giannina Lird, Bella Mozzone, Brianna Mundy and Elizabeth Ryan. Caitlin Orlando is their coach.
The boys winter track team was awarded the Conference 6 Team Sportsmanship award. The winner is selected by the coaches in Conference 6, and is a testament to the professionalism, respect, tact, and maturity that the Mineola track team has practiced throughout the season’s duration, under the leadership of captains Dylan Bestler, Jake Tavernite, Andrew Pereira and Ryan Kelly. Mineola was also the Conference 6 Champion, defeating Seaford, Clarke, Friends Academy, Malverne, East Rockaway, Oyster Bay, Wheatley, and Locust Valley.
