Under the leadership of coach Kristin Frazer, the Mineola High School girls cross-country team has won its first championship by defeating all six schools in their division. This is the first championship for the Cross Country program since the fall of 1974.
Seniors Caitlin Breen and Erika DaCosta have led the Mustangs all season. Breen and DaCosta finished in the top four in every league meet race this season. Cindy Gabbay, Katie Cappeller and Jessica Shi were able to finish in the top 10 at each race to help the Mustangs dominate their league meet competitors. Seniors Kristina Cotroneo and Michelle Martins rounded out the top seven varsity girls to help lead this team to the championship. Sophomore Karen Lee has made steady improvements all season and will be a great addition to the varsity squad next season.
With only one loss in the 14 team Conference, Mineola has high expectations for the Conference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 21. A team finish in the top five would qualify the girls for the County Championships to be held on November 7.
Congratulations to coach Frazer and for all of the girls for a job well done!
