The Mineola Mini-Mustangs girls U10 travel soccer team improved their league record to 5-0-1 with a solid 2-0 win over the MassapequaX-Treme on Saturday, May 16. Christen Patalano netted both goals forMineola, including one off a deft pass from Katie Russelman.
The Mini-Mustangs’ defense once again had a solid showing. In the first six league games this season, the team has allowed only three goals against.
Jillian Palma, Michelle Viola and Casey Conners had strong games on defense for Mineola. Goalkeeper Cara Kennedy recorded her fourth shutout of the season.
On Sunday, May 17, the Mini-Mustangs suffered their first loss in 10 games at the hands of the Brentwood Lady Eagles in a shootout. The non-league loss eliminated Mineola from the annual Waldbaums Cup.
Injuries to star forwards Brianna O’Brien, Christen Patalano and Emma Feimer made for a thin bench for the Mini-Mustangs.
Shannon Durham, the backbone of the Mineola defense, had a dominant game in front of goalie Cara Kennedy, who made 15 saves. Allison Lamonica scored Mineola’s lone regulation-time goal on a spectacular long run and sliding shot. Meghan Lafaye and Cara Kennedy scored during the shootout for the Mini-Mustangs.
