After graduating eight starting seniors and faced with moving from Conference III to a tougher Conference II, Coaches Massaro and Hock-Bennett did not know what to expect.
Returning All County player Sami Stavish and All Conference players Kalie Medlock, Erica Antonison and Heather Dolan did not disappoint. Sami Stavish led the team with 66 goals and Kalie Medlock pitched in with 40. Erica Antonison and Heather Dolan bolstered the defense and were vital parts of transitioning the ball to the offense.
The Mustangs ended the regular season at 11-4 (7-1). Massaro was encouraged in losses to perennial national powerhouses Garden City and Manhasset. To be able to score 12 goals against the five-time State champion Garden City Trojans and to hold Manhasset to 10 goals gave the team the confidence it needed down the stretch.
Massaro and Hock-Bennett singled out the emergence of several key players who made the difference in the season. Sophomores Kerri Medlock and Alicia Mercurio rounded out the team with their strong play. Kerri Medlock had 52 goals and numerous assists and Alicia Mercurio made her impact on the defensive end of the field. Juniors Lacey Fater and Kayla Vesely added speed and transition to Mineola’s high-powered attack. Seniors Rachel Furuya (defense) and Patricia DePinho (attack) as well as freshman Ashley Stavish (attack) added strong consistent play to complement the team. Katie Dul’s unselfish transition into the goal aided the team.
