Mineola Booster Club Honors Varsity Athletes

Emily Glenn, T.J. Winters Named Athletes of the Year
Each year, the Mineola Booster Club holds a dinner to honor the Mineola High School varsity athletes who have committed themselves to many long hours of practices and games in the name of athletics and sportsmanship. These athletes have showed dedication and leadership and many have showed perseverance. Regardless of how the Mustangs teams ended up in the standings, participation has ensured that they are all winners.
The Mineola Mustang student-athletes did have their share of success during the 2008-2009 school year. The girls volleyball, bowling and lacrosse along with the boy’s soccer and football teams all qualified by the county playoffs. The girl’s lacrosse team won its conference championships and senior wrestler Leonard Dul won the county championship in the 170-pound weight class.
In addition, the golf, cross country, boys soccer, girls soccer, girls basketball, boys winter track, girls winter track, girls lacrosse, softball and boys and girls spring track were named New York State Scholar Athlete teams by having cumulative averages over 90.
The awards dinner also enables the coaching staff at Mineola High School to honor some individuals who have exemplified what high school athletics are supposed to be about.
The Unsung Hero award goes to athletes who are always there to help their coaches and teammates. They are tireless workers who are truly dedicated to the teams they plan on. This year, the Unsung Hero awards went to Patrick Martorella and Jill Wetzel.
The last awards of the evening are the male and female athletes of the year. These individuals are not only fierce competitors off the field but they conduct themselves with class off the field, setting a positive example for underclassmen as well as their teammates. This year, the coaches chose two deserving individuals who have built upon the tradition of Mineola Mustang athletics with their dedication, commitment, hard work and talent. The female athlete of the year and male athlete of the year are Emily Glenn and T.J. Winters.
Of course, the accomplishments of the athletes would not be possible without the encouragement of the coaches and parents. Parents who also are commitment to their children’s careers also deserve congratulations as do the members of the Mineola Athletic Booster Club. The members of that organization who are a major part of Mineola athletics include president Matthew Sanderleaf, vice-president Bill Kain, treasurer Susan Hock, corresponding secretary Marie Sallie and recording secretary Laurie Stavish. Other dedicated members include Maryann Siwinski, Jane Lapin, Maura Gaffney, Ann Maloney, Tom Winters and John Kerney.
