MAA Mineola Storm Girls 12U softball team won the Merillon Summer Classic Tournament held Aug. 7 and 8. The Storm had a tough Saturday playing in their first ever double-header coming away with a win and a loss.
The championship round began Sunday morning against the Hicksville White team. Anna Bongiorno ignited an early five run rally, but the lead soon slipped away. With the score tied after the two-hour time limit, the Storm played two extra innings before squeezing home the winning run on a perfectly executed bunt by Meghan Lafaye.
In the second round game, the Mineola girls played Floral Park, which had beaten the Storm on Saturday. The girls were determined to avenge the loss and behind the outstanding pitching performance of Emily Skupp, did just that with a 3-1 win.
Tina Conway and Erin Gruppe provided key hits while Teresa Holiday, Mallory Donellan and Hannah Hoyt all turned in solid defensive efforts. Rebecca Benintendi arrived just in time to solidify what had been a shaky Storm outfield.
The Mineola Storm then played in its third consecutive game of the day and fifth of the weekend against the National League Champion Hicksville Orange team. Lizzie Caccavale got things going with her usual hustle for an early lead, but once again a tough opponent fought back against an exhausted Mineola team.
With the game tied and two outs in the fourth inning, Noelle Hines and Mallory Schnauffer were on base when Cara Kennedy lined a double to right field scoring both girls to give Mineola an 8 - 6 lead. Cara threw shutout ball the rest of the way striking out the final Hicksville batter. After almost seven continuous hours of softball, the Mineola Storm took home the championship.
