The Oyster Bay High School auditorium really needs your help. It appears that renovating and restoring it will be an act of love and not a fact of taxation.
In a way, that is both sad and wonderful.
Sad that the public, in the broad general sense of the word will not invest in it, wonderful in that it will be restored by people, lovingly.
In a way it says something about this school district that might not be what we would like - that the performing arts aren't nuts and bolts enough to have the project put into a school budget. But that is what is feared by supporters and what was seen as the reason to go private to get the needed work accomplished.
It appears to be the way to go in this area. Budgets are easy targets to attack and no one wants to see a budget defeated. That may be changing, but it's hard to know if now is the time.
Still, the dynamics of the performing arts education at Oyster Bay High School are going along "hummingly." Careers in the theater are being seen as possible for the young people in the district - not only in performing, but also in the business of show business.
Credit we are sure goes to Mr. Frank Imperiale's expertise. We are lucky he comes with a theater background. Thanks we are sure also go to Stuart Rauch, supervisor of fine and performing arts. Credit should also go to the board for supporting the theatrical efforts of the district.
Leaving the "theater," after seeing How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Al Ludlam said, "We don't need to go to Broadway to see theater!"
That was a great way to sum things up.
Being there reminded us of why we need to renovate the auditorium. There was a draft from the side doors, in the area we were sitting. The sound really could be better. The seats could be improved.
What is wonderful is that when it is all completed, we will have a super theater. It is comparable to some we've gone to recently in New York. It has real style!
We're sure it will be possible to attract professional shows to visit the area as well as using it for student productions. It has a great future.
