Experience paid off in a big way this season as the Oyster bay High School girls basketball team won their fourth straight Long Island Class C championship. The team's trademark, their great defense, earned Oyster Bay's 45-30 win against Hampton Bays at Massapequa on March 10. Sophomore Kristen Egan did a superb job holding off Hampton Bays' leading scorer. Some of the Baymen's leading scorers were Kristen Egan with 12 points, Heather Koines with 9 points and Leslie Panagot and Elizabeth Papa each with 7 points.
Before playing for the LI Championship, the team won the Nassau County Class C title against East Rockaway, 53-43 playing at Hofstra University on Feb. 27. Leslie Panagot scored 11 points keeping the team in the lead in the second and third quarters of the game. Senior Christine DeSimone scored 20 points and was named MVP.
Coach Bruce Levorchick and Assistant Coaches Val Halesworth and Scott Walley led top-seeded Oyster Bay to the memorable win, giving the team their four-time LI Class C championship. Arnold Minkoff, the director of physical education and athletics said, "The girls on the team and the coaches worked very hard, they deserve all the credit."
