Francis P. DeVine, a lifelong resident of Oyster Bay, died peacefully at home on March 30, 1999 at the age of 85. He was born on March 28, 1914 in Oyster Bay to Thomas and Catherine DeVine. He loved to talk about Baylis Hall and living on estates in Cove Neck. He graduated from St. Dominic's in 1934 and was especially proud to have been on the first basketball team at St. Dom's. He was a lifelong parishioner and always worked on the St. Rocco Festival.
After graduating from St. Dominic's Francis entered the McAllister School of Embalming. He worked in New York for several years and in June of 1946 he opened the Francis P. DeVine Funeral Home, Inc. He fulfilled his dream by opening and successfully running the funeral home. He truly loved being a funeral director and helping families. He treated every family the same and always helped families in need. Even with young children to support, he still helped those in need.
He was a longtime member of AA to which he gave gratitude and thanks for the gift of sobriety.
Francis loved Oyster Bay. He never thought of retiring. When often asked about going south he would reply, "This is God's country, why would I leave Oyster Bay? I have the water here."
He was an active member for 30 years of the Oyster Bay Fire Co. rising to the rank of 1st assistant chief. He served as secretary of the Fireman's Benevolent Association for over 20 years and was currently serving as a trustee of that board. He was an honorary member of Oyster Bay Fire Co. #1.
Francis served as president of the Oyster Bay Rotary Club, past director of the Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the K of C Council #1206. He was a member of the Italian-Amercan Club where he used to chair the St. Patrick's Day Dance.
He loved being on his boat the Poppy. He loved to just sit in West Harbor in Cove Neck or to fish and clam.
He was the husband of Dorothea (nee Murphy). Father of Norine (Michael) Kenny, Mary (Robert) Warburgh, Dorothy (Walter) Rentschler, Francis P. (Carol), Robert, Michael (Dee), Karen (Joseph) Minicozzi and Paul J. Grandfather of 15. Great-grandfather of two. Uncle of Dr. Richard (Judy) Snayd and family.
Arrangements were made by the Francis P. DeVine Funeral Home, Oyster Bay. Funeral Mass at St. Dominic's Chapel. The funeral route took Francis for a final journey through Oyster Bay, down past his home, past his birthplace on W. Main St., down Shore Rd. and through Mill Neck to his final resting place at Locust Valley Cemetery.
The family requests donations be made to the Francis P. DeVine Memorial Fund (all monies will be distributed amongst the charities in Oyster Bay that he supported over the years) or the Theodore Roosevelt Bird Sanctuary, Cove Rd., Oyster Bay.
He will be missed.
