Baseball in Oyster Bay has begun. Under the guidance of the Police Athletic League many Oyster Bay families are now enjoying the great American pastime of baseball.
This year's opening day was accompanied by special festivities. Parade chair Bob McEvoy orchestrated a fun-filled event that rivaled Memorial Day. All 25 PAL teams were present and participated in a walk that began at PAL headquarters South Street and ended at the North Field of Roosevelt Beach.
On hand were fire trucks from Atlantic Steamers, Oyster Bay Fire Company #1 and East Norwich. Players, coaches and families upon arrival at the beach paraded in front of a stage set up by the Town of Oyster Bay.
After opening remarks by Legislators John Canning and Ed Mangano, Town Supervisor John Venditto threw out the opening day ball. Also present were PAL Director Bill Ott and board President Joe Ranaldo. Bob McEvoy was especially pleased with the turnout and has already begun planning next year's opening day.
Two games were played by teams from the major's league which is composed of players from grades 5, 6, and 7. In game one Woodstock Farms outscored New England Financial by a score of 7-4. Bret Fleury and Brendon Williams led the maroon team from New England Financial.
On the opposite field Suffolk County PBA won over Oyster Bay Fire Co. #1. Strong pitching by James Solomito and superb fielding by Jonathon Shoemaker led the team for the fire company. The blues from Suffolk had outstanding plays by Jonathan Kneller and Mike Cazzola.
