The 6th grade team from the St. Dominic parish of Oyster Bay repeated as undefeated league champions for the second straight year. Last year, as fifth graders, they went 12-0 league and coasted through the playoffs to finish 14-0. This year they were 10-0 going into the playoffs.
The team had a batting average of .384, and a pitching staff with a combined 0.27 ERA. The team was comprised of 5th and 6th graders from the immediate area. Billy Melillo lead the team with a hefty .481 batting average; followed closely by Sage Chevins .435; Robbie Kraft .419; Eric Multer .412; Scott Dolce .400; Bobby Reimals .391, and John Mulder .389. Sage Chevins led the team with four home runs. Timely defense and timely offense were displayed by John Perrone, Bobby Gartland, Chris Jenney, Tim Barnett, and Alex Bertoli. A strong pitching staff let up only 14 hits the entire season. Billy Melillo, Chris Jenney, Sage Chevins, Robbie Kraft did not let up an earned run. Tim Barnett and Alex Bertoli only let up 2 earned runs between them.
The CYO semifinals put St. Dominic against Cure of Arts (Merrick). St. Dominic won by a score of 16-1. All 12 players hit safely in the game and RBI's were driven in by 9 different players. Cure of Arts collected 2 hits in a fine pitching performance by 3 different Bayhawk pitchers.
The finals found St. Dominic's up against a strong St. Aloyisius team from Great Neck by virtue of their 7-3 win over St. Ignatius of Hicksville. Chris Jenney opened up the bottom of the first with a double down the third base line followed by Robbie Kraft's walk. Sage Chevins came to the plate and delivered a two out single to left scoring both runners. Billy Melillo was on the mound for the Bayhawks. St. Aloyisius reached him for 3 runs in the third inning. These were the first runs he gave up all year and put St. Aloyisius up 3-2. The bottom of the third saw the Bayhawks retaliate with 3 runs as Bobby Reimals, Alex Bertoli, Chris Jenney, Robbie Kraft, and Billy Melillo all hit safely. The fourth saw hits by Jonny Mulder, Tim Barnett, a beautiful bunt by Bobby Gartland, and another hit each by Bobby Reimals and Alex Bertoli.
Billy Melillo threw through the fifth inning collecting his 14th strike out and turned the ball over to Sage Chevins. Sage pitched scoreless 6th and 7th innings striking out 4 more batters. Robbie Kraft played a great defensive game behind the plate catching the entire game. John Perrone made a couple of hustling defensive plays. The final found St. Dominic on top by a score of 9-3.
